Analyzing menus from 561 restaurants globally, this study evaluated whether vegan/vegetarian meals were actually healthful. Restaurants were rated based on their use of refined grains, saturated fats, and deep-frying. Only 27% of omnivorous (OMNI) restaurants offered any healthy plant-based entrées, versus 86% of vegan (VEG) ones. However, even VEG restaurants had limited healthy options, with an average of 3.2 healthy dishes per menu. The authors call for mandatory nutrition disclosures to promote genuinely healthy plant-based eating in restaurants.
